Sustainable green growth

Unpacking the Secrets of Beekeeping and Natural Regeneration: A Success Story from Thunduwike- Malawi. In partnership with the Judith Foundation, CeGED has successfully launched a climate resilience project in the Thunduwike area of Mzimba District, transforming lives through sustainable beekeeping and natural forest regeneration. The project addresses the intertwined challenges of poverty, deforestation, and limited economic opportunities, especially for the youth.

By leveraging local resources, community members have been trained in sustainable farming practices and beekeeping. This has led to increased agricultural yields, natural soil regeneration, and the production of honey and other by-products such as candles and polish made from beeswax. Beneficiaries, like Rollent Mtheto, have seen their livelihoods improve significantly, with many investing in motorbikes and bicycles for additional income through local transportation services. Families now have access to nutritious meals, better healthcare, and education, and overall poverty levels in the area have notably decreased.

Starting with just three groups, the project now boasts over 30 groups with more than 2,000 participants, some of whom have formed cooperatives. The initiative’s success has inspired replication in over 20 neighbouring communities, leading to widespread environmental conservation efforts, including the reduction of deforestation through community by-laws.
