Project Synopsis:
Rabecca Makiyi's Courage in the Face of Cyclone Freddy
In the aftermath of Cyclone Freddy, which ravaged the southern Malawi village of Mtauchira in March 2024, Rabecca Makiyi's selfless act of bravery has become a symbol of resilience. Amidst the chaos and destruction, Rabecca chose to stay and protect her four children, even as the storm threatened to engulf their home. Her heroic decision, which contrasted sharply with the tragedy that struck her mother, serves as a testament to the indomitable human spirit.
Cyclone Freddy left a trail of devastation in its wake, claiming 18 lives and displacing hundreds of villagers. The storm destroyed homes, crops, and livelihoods, pushing many communities into poverty. In the Chanza Evacuation Camp, survivors faced dire conditions, including food shortages and inadequate shelter.
Despite these immense challenges, Rabecca's resolve remained unwavering. Her story highlights the urgent need for resilience-building in vulnerable communities like Mtauchira. Ceged was there to help the affected with essential. More than 100 people from the village, surrounding and neighbouring were assisted with essentials from clothes to foodstuff.
Our next phase aims to provide comprehensive support to local residents, including Rabecca, by focusing on mental health, sustainable livelihoods, and community resilience. With your partnership, we can empower these communities to overcome the devastating effects of Cyclone Freddy and build a more sustainable future.
